The 12th issue of Field Notes (Index_25) is site-specific. It was designed as a record of my experience as Artist-in-Residence at Aviário Studio in Ferreira do Zêzere, Portugal from May 19–June 03, 2025.
The publication presents three new bodies of work generated during this two-week period: 1) Moon Rocks, a collection of 60 unfired clay rocks inspired by volcanic terrain, 2) Lunarscapes, a series of 14 hand-sculpted glazed ceramic surface studies (in tile form), and 3) Archival Document, a deconstructed publication consisting of hand-rolled clay "pages" with graphic design treatments applied with fired decals. The publication pairs original photography, digital illustration, and process notes with text excerpts sourced from science.nasa.gov. Photographic inserts disrupt the work to provide a more human context for the production. These include images of the local landscape, quiet spaces, familiar surfaces, and snapshots of the artist.
The publication is 5.5" x 8.5." All 46 pages were printed on 80# Hammermill Premium Coverstock and each issue contains an additional 25 4"x 6" glossy Kodak photo inserts. This publication was designed and Wire-O bound (in red) by Kristen Mallia.
