Gendered Edits: The Performative Selfie is a series of digital self-portraits built entirely on mobile devices. Body modification takes place in various phone applications, allowing for the alteration of facial features. Each selfie is then dressed using basic device image editing. These digital alterations and illustrated layers create a costume, resulting in the shedding, or concealment, of identity. These digital layers of distance create a safe space to share this altered-ego in a public sphere, specifically
on Instagram. Social media becomes a stage. The embellished features, layers of manipulation and concealment, and dramatic caption titling complete the Instagram performance.
